“The best decision we’ve ever made to improve our home, and our lifestyle. I would recommend one”
The pains and gains of 3+ storey houses
In the wake of the Concorde crash in July 2000, the Financial Times published an article titled ‘Living
Dangerously’, which listed the probabilities of death in the next year from a range of causes. The figures were reproduced by a Hass & Lass report that added the probability of a fatal accident in the home.
The report showed that during 1999 nearly 4000 people (3974) died as a result of an accident at home – 1706 of which were a result of a fall. The odds of a fall were 1 in 55 – and just to show how likely this is, the odds of burning yourself was 1 in 600, and think about how many near misses we have every day with the hob, oven, kettle, hot tap and even hair straighteners!)
One of the most common reasons why people attended A&E in 1999 was because of falls in the home – approximately 1.2 million made the trip because of a, well, trip. The more stairs you have, the greater the chance of injury. Factor in the added bulk of a load of washing and it’s a recipe for disaster.
Alter the height of a step by just 1cm and most people will trip, so something has got to be said about the extra weight you’re carrying made by the average load of washing in your arms? Surely this has an impact on how we walk up or down stairs? The effort needed to step up is increased, and as our legs tire, the effectiveness of the movement is reduced, leading to a greater chance of us missing a step, tripping, or stumbling.
With multi story homes the laundry facilities aren’t always near the baths and bedrooms where the bulk of the laundry originates, and is returned to when finished. However convenient a single level home is the architectural lure of a complex multi-storey home is hugely attractive to many of us. They allow for a greater split of rooms, but this can create a distance between laundry areas and the dirty clothing found in bedrooms around the house.
The number of stairs also poses the issue of mobility – even for single story houses, many don’t take account of the laundry room residing in the basement, which creates the same hassle.
