“The best decision we’ve ever made to improve our home, and our lifestyle. I would recommend one”
Too many dirty socks
The unseen omen for those that take part in sport – rugby in particular – is the bulky, wet, smelly and heavy washing bag full of dirty kit after the game.
Nobody wants to do washing, and most of the time it ends up being left in the corner of a room to be forgotten about until next week. This problem intensifies when a family of two or three roll up with a collection of muddy shorts after the match. Many a time has come when I’ve had to make do with the fragrant and still slightly damp kit from last week that has been sat in a heap for the last week because it never reached the washing machine.
Eighty minutes of rugby union can reduce even the pearliest of pearly whites to a congealed muddy mess - and the person gifted the chore of washing them, to tears. It’s a real hassle that you just don’t want to deal with after the game. Your tired aching legs feel like jelly, and whether you’re doing the washing or creating the washing, the long walk up or down stairs to the washing machine can be as daunting as the match itself.
Certainly for a player, the last thing you want to do is carry a full kit bag full of shorts, socks, team shirt, thermals and underwear upstairs or downstairs to the washing machine. The team shirt and cotton shorts are notoriously thick (to reduce the chances of them ripping) which means they retain water like a camel and become fairly weighty. You have to be a rugby player to carry a rugby player’s dirty washing.
Rugby is a sport that is gratuitously messy even off the pitch. In hindsight, the almost ceremonial throwing of our muddy shirts into the general area of the laundry bin wasn’t the most helpful way to leave them for washing, but every team does it. The industrial level of dirty kit produced by a single team at the end of a game is staggering - I remember our club steward having to wheel the bin of kit around on a trolley as if it was a skip going down to the landfill.
And there was always at least one of us with a mismatch of socks. In fact, there were always too many dirty socks that suffered the same fate as my aforementioned ‘kit from last week’.
