Do this to ensure your laundry smells fresh
Do this to ensure your laundry smells fresh

What to do if your laundry doesn't smell as fresh as you thought it would.

Use a laundry chute at home and this is the fast, convenient way to speed up your washing cycle. Run a busy household and you'll get through stacks of loads throughout the year and be busy laundering clothing, so you have clean, fresh clothes for all the family.

What happens is those whites aren't as fragrant as you like though? Say your coloureds have a pungent aroma, or the latest dark wash has a distinctive pong, and you wonder where you have gone wrong?

Washing doesn't always turn out quite as planned, so here we examine the causes of lingering laundry smells.

Get the timing right

Timing the wash is a good way to eliminate odours. Leave damp clothes lingering in the washing machine after they have been washed and this can cause issues with smells. Use the timer on the machine to coordinate with your other activities, if you are going out for example, you can delay the cycle so the wash more or less finishes the moment you get home.

Use good quality washing detergents

Buy budget brand washing powder and not only could your washing be a disappointment, it might not smell that nice either. Opt for clean smelling washing powders, choose a fragrant washing gel, and use fabric softener that smells like a summer's meadow to get rid of nasty whiffs.

Clean the machine

On a monthly basis, treat your washing machine to a comprehensive clean. Leave it empty, use a bleach-based detergent cleaner and crank the heat setting up, to run the machine on a boil wash. This helps to cleanse the interior of the washing machine and you should notice the inside smells lovely and fresh when you open the door after the spin cycle has finished.

Dry clothing outdoor where possible

To prolong the freshly laundered smell, aim to dry clothing outdoors, weather permitting of course! This isn't always easy in the British climate but if you do get the opportunity to dry garments outside, take advantage of this whenever you can. You'll notice an immediate difference when you slip under a freshly laundered duvet at night, and it'll soon send you off to sleep.

Follow these steps and every time you retrieve washing from a laundry chute and clean the garments, it's going to smell wonderful.
