IS YOUR LAUNDRY BASKET BUGGING YOU?
IS YOUR LAUNDRY BASKET BUGGING YOU?

Ever thought why some days you feel a bit run-down, without any explanation?

No 'day after the night before' explanation... No 'what have I eaten?' concerns... NO ideas at all really! Now I'm not advocating that you ignore any off-colour symptoms, however, for those who don't run to the doctors every 2 minutes, the reason could actually be caused by something as simple as an irritant in your house. I'm not talking about the puppy who runs you ragged here, this is far less obvious and something that can be cleared up more easily... let's talk about the irritants in the cleaning products that you use daily.

It was quite a shock for me the day I discovered that the 'expensive' but widely available 'skin-sensitive' laundry liquid I'd been using for 3 years had actually been causing me to feel run-down from time to time but the evidence became clear after taking a simple allergy test. Everything I'd been wearing, sleeping in or on, and drying myself with - yes even the towels I used were causing a toxic effect on me... just imagine it was building up day on day! I'd put my 'negative' days down to stress before this massive realisation - but no amount of stress-reducing gym visits, or calming herbal teas had improved my well-being. NO - it was the laundry that was my bug-bear - literally. I was simply being chemically poisoned on a 24/7 basis.

So let's look at what can be toxic to us sensitive types: laundry tables are top of the list, then there's those chemical infused drier sheets, and then just about any detergent that you use to get clothes clean and soft - all have potential ingredients in them that can be irritants. Here's a brief list of some of the most common substances and their potential hazards - benzyl acetate is linked to pancreatic cancer; benzyl alcohol is linked to upper respiratory problems; ethanol is linked to central nervous system disorders; limonene is a known carcinogen; chloroform is a carcinogenic neurotoxin and anaesthetic. Unmasked, these chemicals smell horrible, but we're so used to choosing a product because of the smell, or even because we like the packaging, we don't think about what's in them.

So what's the solution? Let's go back in time - adding a quarter cup of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) to the wash cycle softens the fabric whilst adding a quarter cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to soften fabric and prevent static build up. For more tips, my best advice is... ask a grandparent!
