It is Official, Lads are Laundry Layabouts
It is Official, Lads are Laundry Layabouts

Sorry to tell you guys, but research shows that ladies do the vast majority of housework to home.

Okay here's a subject that's going to divide opinion, who do you think does the most work in your household? When male and females share a home, and both are working full-time, which one do you think does the most household chores?

According to a survey carried out by woman's hour on Radio 4 in which 1,001 men and women were questioned, women claimed they spent an average of 11.5 hours a week on household chores in comparison to just six hours for guys.

This might come as a shock to some people, most blokes won't believe it, but there's a definite rift when it comes to keeping the house tidy and it seems like guys simply aren't pulling their weight.

Is this the true picture though?

Household tasks for women, not for men.

During the Radio 4 survey only 5% of men admitted to cleaning the house on a weekly basis, and women more often than not, performed an average of double the amount of work.

Remarkably nearly two-thirds of women were fine about this inequality because they are happy with the balance, or simply believed they performed the tasks better than their other half.

The tasks completed by women varied greatly and included:

  • Cleaning - Vacuuming, cleaning bathroom etc.
  • Laundry - washing clothing, bedding, sheets etc.
  • Tidying Up - Clearing Away Clutter
  • Ironing
  • Arranging childcare
  • Organising the Family Budget
  • Taking Children to Sports Clubs
  • Helping with Homework
  • Making sandwiches - packing schoolbags etc.
  • Buying Presents
  • Reading Stories
  • Playing nursemaid when children are poorly

Learn to love those laundry chores!

The findings might alarm some men but don't feel bad if you aren't pulling your weight at home. There's still time to do something about this guys, maybe do a little calculation and see how fair and equal the chore duties are in your house.

Actually, the BBC make this easier for you, they provide a 'Chore Wars' calculator tool which conveniently calculates who takes on most responsibility at home.

Try it if you dare...

And remember, there's nothing to fear by taking on extra chores at home. You can simplify domestic tasks by installing features such as laundry chutes at home. Get in touch with us here at Inventive Homes if you like the sound of this.
