New Years Resolutions for Your Home
New Years Resolutions for Your Home

New Year is the perfect time to get your home in order, leaving you with more time, more money and less stress.

Promises and resolutions are made by everyone at this time of year. Few of them are kept to, but you will definitely want to try two or three on this list to make your life easier, leaving you with more time and money to indulge your passions.

1. Decrease your energy consumption

Decreasing your home's energy use will not only help to save the planet, but also your bank balance. By ensuring your home is properly insulated for colder spells, you can instantly cut down your heating bill. Electricity can be lowered through small changes such as turning the TV off as opposed to putting it on stand-by and turning out lights when you leave the room. By making a point to not have your laptop on when you go to sleep, you can save on your energy bills and have a better night's sleep.

2. Ventilate your home

Low quality indoor air will hold a number of contaminants such as dust, mould spores, viruses and sometimes pollen. All these things can bring about allergies or illnesses, and will be worse during winter, when it's tempting to keep your windows and doors closed. Portable air cleaners, low VOC paints and localised ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms can all help to improve the air quality of your home.

3. Start a home improvement budget

Setting up a yearly budget for home maintenance and improvement can help to ensure you don't overspend on your home, and can start the foundation for saving for major improvements. Kitchen appliances, redecoration, or even installing a laundry chute for greater convenience can all be funded from this budget guilt-free.

4. Declutter your home

Decluttering your home will really help you feel like you've accomplished a great task and make your home far more welcoming at the end of a long day. By starting with your storage places, you can free up room for useful items you want to keep. Similarly, getting more storage will help you to present a neater and tidier home when you have guests.

5. Manage your water use

The average home uses hundreds of gallons of water every day from simple things such as baths, showers, washing up and even brushing our teeth. Excessive use of hot water is another factor for higher energy bills, so by cutting down baths and showers, you can save even more money and have a positive impact on the environment. Reducing water use can be achieved by even turning off the tap whilst brushing your teeth, showing just how easy these positive changes can be.
