Reinstate these Period Features to boost Property Prices

The features you should think about reinstating in a period property to boost the resale value.

Own a period property and one of the best aspects of living in this type of house is being able to enjoy all the wonderful features the home comes with as standard. One of the main attractions of Victorian or Edwardian dwellings is their finer fixtures, the quality fittings that help to give the property character.

Sadly, many of these original features are stripped away over the years, the interior of the property is modernised, and it loses some of its original charm as a result. Invest in a property of this ilk though and you can restore many features that have been removed, such as the items we highlight here.

Cornices

Cornices are the high ornamental features, mounted on the wall just below ceiling height. They're cosmetic features, and look great on properties where the interior has high ceilings, reinstate these fittings and they really bring a house to life. Cheap, polystyrene aftermarket cornices can be purchased from household DIY stores, however, to restore the aesthetic charm of a property, invest in good quality plaster mouldings.

Skirting Boards

High skirting boards were commonly fitted to older types of properties, over the years smaller, more discreet boards took their place. Whilst they look okay in modern houses, narrow depth skirting boards do look rather lost in period homes, replace them with higher fixtures, available from specialist skirting and architrave companies.

Fireplaces

One of the biggest focal features in period properties is a fireplace, usually made from cast iron, quite often equipped with tiled inserts and wooden surrounds. As trends changed these fireplaces were often ripped out of properties, to be replaced with trendy gas or electric appliances. Thankfully reclamation yards stock original fire surrounds, salvaged from property refurbishments. Reclaimed fireplaces look good in any room. They add style to lounges or dining rooms, and look beautiful in bedrooms too.

Ceiling Roses

One of the first things you notice when you step foot inside a period property is how high the ceilings are. Enter a Victorian home for example and you won't have to worry about touching your head on the ceiling, there's acres of space, and this is the perfect place to hang a large, central ceiling light. One other feature you might want to reinstate in the property is a ceiling rose. These are beautiful and highly ornate features used as a base for ceiling lights. They make a statement within the room, come in a variety of dimensions, and they're readily available from online stockists.
