Useful Features for Multi-Story Houses
Useful Features for Multi-Story Houses

Own a property with numerous flights of stairs, an attic and a basement, and these functional features might come in handy.

Most multi-story houses have acres of room for a growing family. In many instances, these are period properties, spread out over a number of floors, offering ample living space to the inhabitants within. Sometimes they are modern townhouses, with a couple of bedrooms situated on the middle floor, and a further master bedroom on the uppermost level.

In all instances, the addition of specific features will often assist the household, and make the living space more user-friendly.

Here are classic examples of features you might want to instate within a three-story plus property.

Downstairs WC

It's no fun running up countless flights of stairs when you are desperate for the loo. One solitary bathroom can be a bit of a bugbear in multi-level properties, so the addition of a downstairs cloakroom could be a good idea. Install another WC on the lower level and this spreads demand, preventing the need to dash upstairs.

Light Tunnel

Tall, multi-level period terraces suffer from light issues on upper landing areas. Close bedroom doors and these areas are often devoid of natural light, this makes them dark during the daytime, and could force the occupants into turning on electric lights, thus wasting energy and running up utility bills. There is a solution to this though. It's called a light tunnel and it's a cylindrical tube that runs from ceiling to roof, with plastic diffusers on each end. This clever addition throws natural light down onto dark areas, making the area feel more natural.

Basement Conversion

Basement areas are wasted space in the vast majority of multi-level properties. They are commonly found in period properties from the Edwardian and Victorian eras. Most are used for storage and in many cases they suffer from water penetration and damp. Once converted these areas become handy living spaces, put to good use as home offices, additional bedrooms, workout rooms or home theatres.

Laundry Chute

Adding a laundry chute to a multi-story property is a pretty shrewd decision. Come wash day you'll be glad you have this innovative system installed, it'll save you making numerous trips up and down the stairs, whilst keeping you safe from slips and trips at the same time.
