Work/lifestyle balance, what controls yours? What is a work-lifestyle balance, and is yours affected by little stresses in the day? Mine is. A Mental Health Foundation survey found that after a day of work 58% of people feel irritable, and the more hours you spend at work, the more hours of your free time you're likely to spend worrying about it. Taking just a little bit of stress out of your day can make a big difference. Even something as simple as having a tidy home to come back to, or being able to go to bed knowing that you have clean clothes for work tomorrow because it was sorted the day before. Now, this work-lifestyle balance is not something that is dictated by the demands of doing the laundry of course, but it is definitely interrupted by it. That brief and precious gap between getting through the door and when you first sit down is crucial - we don't walk through the door with a renewed energy for domestic chores. For me, as soon as my feet leave the ground and my posterior touches the sofa, anything more strenuous than channel hopping on the TV is nigh impossible. At the other end of the scale, having to leave in a rush for work in the morning knowing that you're down to your last clean shirt and underwear is never a great start to the day. Do you sort it out before you leave and risk hitting traffic, or persuade yourself that you will have the energy to do it when you're back in the evening (SPOILER ALERT: neither work out!)? Similarly, tidying in a rush because you have guests arriving in the next five minutes and you have to decide between getting rid of the dirty washing and taking the chicken out of the oven is a less than ideal situation. This may seem like a worst case scenario and it is of course, but it happens, I promise. If you're chucking everything under the bed, why not chuck it down a laundry chute instead? It gets there before you do, it's out of sight and most importantly you won't get acrid wafts of Tuesday's gym kit after date night with your other half on Friday night. I may be wrong, but prime time for a working couple isn't helped along by coming back to a washing strewn room. [Return] |
